Connector · Claude

Write pub quizzes with Claude.

Connect Claude to Quiz Master once and it writes straight into your own quiz library — rounds, questions, picture and music rounds, the whole running order — from claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code. You fact-check, rehearse and run the night from the app.

Updated

Server URLhttps://thequizmaster.app/mcp

One address for all three Claude apps. No API key — you sign in on a Quiz Master page with the account you already have.

What you get

Claude in your library, not next to it.

Without the connector, Claude writes a quiz into the chat and you copy it across one question at a time. With it, Claude calls Quiz Master’s tools directly, and the work lands where you’d have put it by hand.

Real quizzes, not chat transcripts

Claude creates quiz templates with the whole running order — welcome, rules, rounds, answer reveals, scoreboards, final scores — and they appear under Quizzes in your workspace, ready to open in the builder.

Your question library, searchable

It can search the questions you already have by text, tag, type or difficulty, reuse them in a new round, and file every new question into the library instead of burying it inside one quiz.

Pictures and music that last

Image, audio and video files are copied into Quiz Master’s own storage, up to 25 MB each, so a picture round can’t break on a dead link mid-quiz. YouTube links go straight onto a question, clipped to the seconds you want.

Guard rails built in

Seventeen tools, scoped to your account, and none of them can delete a quiz or a library question. The worst a muddled prompt can do is write you a round you don’t want.

Every tool, with what it reads and writes, is on the Quiz Master MCP tool reference.

Setup, once

Three Claude apps, one address.

The handshake is the same everywhere: Claude registers itself, sends you to a Quiz Master sign-in page, you approve, and it remembers. Menu names were right at the time of writing — they drift between releases.

On claude.ai

In the browser

  1. Open Settings → Connectors. Newer builds file it under Customize → Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector and give it a name you’ll recognise — “Quiz Master” will do.
  3. Paste the server URL above and add it.
  4. Click Connect. A Quiz Master page opens: sign in with Google or email and password, then press Approve access.
  5. In a new chat, check the connector is switched on in the composer’s tools menu (the + button at the time of writing).

Plans. At the time of writing, custom connectors work on Free accounts too, limited to one. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector under organisation settings first, then each member connects with their own Quiz Master account. Anthropic’s help centre has the current rules.

In Claude Desktop

Mac and Windows app

Usually nothing to do. Connectors belong to your Claude account, not the device, so one added on claude.ai turns up in the desktop app as well. Starting on desktop instead? Same route — Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste the same URL, sign in, approve.

In Claude Code

In a terminal

  1. Add the server:
claude mcp add --transport http quiz-master https://thequizmaster.app/mcp
  2. Start a session, run /mcp, pick quiz-master and authenticate. Your browser opens the same Quiz Master sign-in.
  3. claude mcp list shows the server as needing authentication until you’ve signed in, connected after.

By default the server is added for the current project only. To have it in every project, add it at user scope:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user quiz-master https://thequizmaster.app/mcp

Claude Code earns its keep when your old quizzes live in files: point it at last year’s spreadsheet or a folder of notes and ask it to file the questions into your library with tags.

Try this first

A first conversation.

Four messages, in order. Each one is small enough to check before the next — which is how you’d brief a new co-host, too.

  1. “Read the Quiz Master authoring guide and list the themes, then tell me in three lines what you can build.”

Claude calls get_authoring_guide and list_themes. Costs nothing, and every question after this comes back in the right shape.

  2. “Create a quiz called “Test Night” in English with the Arcade theme: welcome, rules, one round of eight general-knowledge questions with its answer reveal, then final scores.”

create_quiz, then add_segment. A round gets its answer-reveal segment paired automatically, as it does in the builder.

  3. “Add a picture round of six famous bridges. Use images from Wikimedia Commons, import them, and use the split layout.”

import_media for each file, then a round whose questions carry the stored images beside the prompt.

  4. “Now go through every answer in Test Night and tell me which ones you’re least sure of, and why.”

get_quiz and a read-only check. This is your fact-check pass — fix what’s shaky yourself, or ask Claude to.

Then open Quizzes in your workspace, open “Test Night” in the builder and hit Preview to see it on the presenter stage. More to copy in the pub quiz prompt library.

Working with Claude

Getting good questions out of Claude.

Have it read the guide first

get_authoring_guide is the schema plus the house style: nine answer types, how rounds pair with their reveals, and the “discussable, not lookup-able” bar. A Claude that has read it writes pub-quiz questions. One that hasn’t writes exam questions.

Make the fact-check its own step

Ask for the round, then in a separate message ask Claude to re-read it and flag every answer it isn’t certain of — dates, superlatives, “the first”, “the largest”. Writing and checking in one breath is where errors slip through. You’re the one at the mic, so check anything flagged before the night.

Keep your house style in a Project

On claude.ai, a Project’s instructions ride along with every chat inside it: the venue, the crowd, points per round, topics you never touch, whether you run bilingual. Saves briefing Claude from scratch every Thursday.

Bilingual is one sentence

Every text field holds more than one language, so “add German to every question in round two” is an ordinary request. To show both at once, ask Claude to set the quiz’s multilingual display to primary-with-subtitle: a smaller second-language line under each question prompt. The builder has no switch for that yet — the connector is the way in.

Go gently with old questions

Questions are live-linked: when Claude edits one, every quiz that uses it changes, last month’s included. For a variant, ask for a new question instead. The tool tells Claude the same thing, so it will usually check with you.

Let it find media, then check it

With web search on, Claude can hunt down direct image files on Wikimedia Commons. Ask it to name the source for each, and spot-check a few in the builder. For what’s-this-song, YouTube links in audio mode keep the video hidden until the answer.

When it doesn’t

Troubleshooting.

Claude says it has no Quiz Master tools

The connector is added but switched off for this chat. Turn it on in the composer’s tools menu. In Claude Code, check claude mcp list and run /mcp if it needs authentication.

The sign-in window does nothing

The Google option opens a popup. Allow popups for thequizmaster.app and try again, or sign in with email and password instead.

It connected the wrong account

Remove the connector, add it again, and on the Quiz Master page sign out first, then sign in with the account you want.

There’s no room for another connector

At the time of writing, Free accounts get one custom connector. Remove one or move up a plan. On Team or Enterprise, ask an Owner to add it.

An image import failed

A “text/html” error means the link was a web page, not the file. On Wikimedia Commons, open the file and copy its upload.wikimedia.org address. Files over 25 MB and SVGs are refused; YouTube links skip import entirely.

It says a quiz doesn’t exist

The id is wrong, or the quiz belongs to a different account — the connector only sees the one you signed in with. Ask Claude to list your quizzes and pick from there.

It asked me to sign in again

The connection renews itself while you use it. Leave it idle for about a month and you’ll sign in once more.

Short answers

FAQ.

Do I need an Anthropic API key?

No. The connector signs in with your Quiz Master account through your browser. There is no key to generate, paste or leak.

Can Claude delete my quizzes or questions?

No — there are no delete tools. Removing a round or a question from a quiz only drops the reference; the question stays in your library and in every other quiz that uses it.

Can Claude run the quiz or keep score?

No. The connector is for writing quizzes. Teams, scoring and the presenter view live in the app, on the night, under your hands.

Can it see other hosts’ quizzes?

No. Every read and write is scoped to the account you signed in with — and nobody else’s connector can reach yours.

Can I connect ChatGPT to the same account?

Yes, both can be connected at once and see the same library. See Quiz Master for ChatGPT for its setup, which has a step or two more.

How do I disconnect?

Remove the connector in Claude’s settings, or run claude mcp remove quiz-master in Claude Code. Everything it wrote stays in your account.

Can I see what it builds before signing up?

Click through a sample quiz on the live demo — no account needed. The connector overview has a film of Claude building one from scratch.

Claude writes it. You run the room.

Sign in, add the connector, and your next quiz night starts as a sentence.
